Sad but ABSOLUTELY true! #avtweeps #theaters AMC Theatres Regal Peacock TV HBO Kaleidescape Jason Kilar CEDIA Joshua Al Kevin Barco Christie Digital Systems
Well, everyone who joined in the bashing of AMC and the demise of the movie theatre, might now wish they invested $10,000 in AMC at the time of this article. It would now be worth $3M thanks to the Short-Squeezers.
I spent a couple of years in the Cinema market for the Digital Projector roll out. It's so sad to see this happen.
Dead? No. Different – yes. They’ll be better. We’ll be there to support exhibitors as they reopen, and as they reimagine the movie-going experience.
Yet another article that completely misses the point. It is Hollywood that is dead, not the cinema. Too many people are equating the cinema experience with Hollywood films. Forget Hollywood. The cinema is about much more than Hollywood. Cinemas are digital. They can play-back literally any format, i.e. DVD, Blu-ray, web, QT, satellite, etc. They are now places where you can watch literally endless forms of alternative content, i.e. sports, music, theatre, opera, Q&As, the list goes on. Cinemas do not need Hollywood anymore. There is a wealth of alternative programming available to sustain cinemas no matter what happens with Hollywood or the TV landscape (for some reason people forget that streaming is merely another form of TV). Cinemas can thrive like never before if they simply focus exclusively on alternative programming. Narrow minded articles like this offer no help to the industry.
Cinema is changing. Not dying. Like many distribution models, it’s being accelerated with COVID but people will - more than ever - crave out of home experiences at the end of this. Cinema will flourish, just not as we currently know it.....
I believe people realize more than ever before that life is too short to sit home every night and all day on the weekends. Cinemas will continue to compete first and foremost in the out-of-home entertainment industry and will remain a good bargain in comparison to its competitors.
Hi Brian - I'll restrain myself. This is like saying no one will go to see live sports in stadiums and arenas anymore because it's so much cheaper and easier to just stay home and watch them on your 85" LED TV. It's a different experience.
Compelling read, Gary. I hope you’re wrong but my gut says you’re probably right. Great time to invest in a home theater projector...
Gary, A very well written article and observations but I don't believe as others have stated this is the death of the Movie Theatre. I do believe we will see a great number of Multiplexes close and others reduce to fewer larger screens. Theatres will have to step up and change as Adam Kroft and others have stated stepping up their game and becoming large entertainment complexes offering much more than just movies. I've seen first hand what Cineplex in Canada can do as some others have offering combined entertainment facilities. Let's hope we don't lose this form of entertainment as I and many others I know still enjoy experiencing great movies in a great venue. Now we need some great movies........thats another story I guess..
